Free State Highway Maps, Disaster Prep, and Food Forethought

Listed below are 17 state highway maps. I’ve only included offers where I’ve already received the map. Many of the websites also include various vacation materials should that interest you. (These offers are primary sourced from “Hey It’s Free.”) Why have paper maps when there’s GPS? Better safe than sorry. GPS can be wrong, fail to work, you can lose the signal, or your car or device can lose power.

And while you’re not thinking about disaster scenarios, you can ponder being bugged-in with hopefully some delicious food you’ve had the forethought to stock up on, because who wants nothing to look forward to for 30 days but ramen noodles and condensed milk and whatever else is lingering in the back of your kitchen cabinets? Maybe you already know those noodles are delicious, but variety is the spice of life and spices can make a world of difference.

I’ve tracked down some spices, a marinade, sweeteners, and a few other goodies you might like to test out for your bug-in kit or bug-out bag worthiness.  All offers have been tested for freshness (availability) in the last 48 hours, except for the maps, as those are usually more long standing offers.

To wrap it up, I’ve included some links to some “starter” products and basic information to help you on your disaster and emergency preparedness mission.

If you’d like to learn the basics of being prepared during disasters or emergencies I highly suggest the DVD Disaster Preparedness for Dummies, which you can get for a dollar or so plus shipping on Amazon. A great companion to the DVD is a free FEMA 34 page preparedness PDF you can download (and I suggest print) that covers basic preparedness, getting informed, emergency planning and checklists, assembling a disaster supplies kit, shelter, hazard-specific preparedness, and practicing and maintaining your plan.

A common issue during emergencies is the lack of clean water. For most situations, LifeStraw solves this problem. This company has a variety of products to fit your needs, including bottles and high volume purification systems. The basic LifeStraw is available on Amazon for under $20 and free shipping is available. You can watch Rhett & Link of Good Mythical Morning test this product in the extreme. (Do not watch if you are easily grossed out.) This video is included in my Survival Playlist.

Did you know that on average there is only three days’ worth of most food on the shelves of your local stores? Watch this video to see what is possible and what you can do to prepare, rather than live in fear.  Remember what I said about variety vs. 30 days’ worth of ramen noodles? This book will teach you to plan ahead for great tasting nutritional meals for when the SHTF and you don’t want your meals to taste like it.

I know this may not be what you want to be thinking about during the holidays, but why not make it a new year’s resolution to be more prepared and get at it now? There are many reasons to take consistent baby steps, both in action and financially. One benefit is keeping your mind on preparedness rather than lingering in a vague fear cloud that is so common in the times we are living in.  Check out this short Forbes article, “The Most Successful People Take Small, Smart Steps Toward Their Goals.” The website Do1Thing offers a free program to receive monthly reminders pertaining to emergency preparedness. This site offers lists for individuals and businesses, fact sheets, and helpful videos. December’s focus is on first aid. So check back tomorrow as I’ll be on the hunt for health related freebies and include some helpful websites, articles and frugal minded products to work on the Do 1 Thing preparedness goal of the month.

Be well,

Vicky
